Minutes of the Southern Chapter Meeting – May 11, 2010

Our May 11, 2010, meeting was held in Corydon at Magdalena’s Restaurant. Seventeen members were present: John Kennard, Diane Knies, Tracy Monroe, Danny Schroeder, Chris Cunningham, Steve Cale, Dave Gries, Chris Boroweicki, Carol Coudret, Shawn Werner, David Bokodi, Jennifer Rekers, George Jones, Travis Goodman, Karen Gordon, Hank Wolfe, and Lonnie Stroud, the new EHS from Orange County (he’s only been on the job for 3 weeks!)

Guest speakers were from Lieberman Technologies in Evansville. They have developed a program they call FLIP (Food Licensing and Inspection Program) which they demonstrated to the group. The program has many capabilities specifically for food inspectors. It keeps track of all food establishments in the county, their current and past inspection reports, schedules next inspections, does billing, food permits, receipts, deposits, etc. Vanderburgh County Health Department currently uses the program and they have nothing but enthusiasm for it. Anyone interested in having Lieberman Technologies work with them on their very own FLIP can contact Rick Culiver at (812) 434-6625 or rculiver@LTnow.com. If you’d like more information from actual users, you can call Chris Borowiecki, Carol Coudret, or Dave Gries at Vanderburgh County.

Treasurer – Treasurer Diane Knies reported a balance of $508.79.

Old business
– John is always on the lookout for ideas for topics and speakers. Please let him know if something is interesting.
New business – John Kennard and Jennifer Rekers attended a meth meeting in Indianapolis on May 10. It was reported that Indiana is one of the top 3 states for meth production. A speaker from the Indiana State Police told them that it’s not a good idea for a group of kids to adopt a road for cleanup because a lot of the trash on the side of the road (coolers, 2 liter bottles, etc.) comes from mobile meth labs and can be dangerous if opened. The Indiana State Police are more than willing to speak to groups regarding meth lab trash. There seems to be concern among several members about the website renewal. Many members said they don’t ever visit the chapter website and don’t see a reason to renew it for $150 a year. John Kennard suggested that instead of everyone putting in $2.00 at every meeting to pay for coffee and doughnuts, that we all put in $5.00. That extra money would pay for the hosting of the website. Danny Schroeder suggested that each county get a sponsor to buy an advertising link on the website for $25 a year. If each health department got one paying sponsor, that would pay for the hosting for a year. John said he will e-mail each member and have them vote.

Some other ideas to raise money for the chapter: Travis Goodman said the West-Central Chapter has a 50/50
drawing at every meeting. Members put $2.00 in the pot, then put their names in a hat. At the end of the meeting a name is drawn. That person wins half of the pot and the chapter gets the other half.

The Fall Conference will be held in Brown County at the Abe Martin Lodge this year, September 26 – 29. Government room rates will be $89/night and John Kennard been speaking to local tourist homes and B&Bs about matching or bettering that rate. It was agreed that Steve Cale would provide a photograph for $100 as our chapter’s Fall Conference auction item again this year. Chris Borowiecki made a motion to accept his fee; Dave Gries provided the second. The motion was voted on by the members and passed. As for door prizes, Shawn Werner will provide a picture frame for $25. Dave Gries made a motion to accept his fee and George Jones seconded. The motion passed after being voted on by all members. Harrison County members will also try to get donations from some or all of the county’s four wineries to use as door prizes or auction items.

Remaining chapter meetings for 2010 will be held as follows on the 2nd week of every 3rd month:
August 10 – Lennie’s (http://bbc.bloomington.com/ ) in Bloomington (?) This might be reconsidered because Lennie’s is not a very large space.

November 9 – Jasper (location to be announced)
After lunch and fellowship, the meeting was adjourned at 1:20 PM.

Meeting minutes taken and respectfully submitted by Tracy Monroe, IEHA Southern Chapter Secretary
